Long Letter   Year: 2003 | Run Time: 6:38

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI) ©2004

you were like a fairy tale
come to life in front of me
and you saw things on the inside
baby i could never see

so i took a trip inside you
across that beautiful terrain
and every scene was a happy dream
you told me that yours were just the same

so i wrote you a long letter
i filled it up with love from start to end
you have always deserved so much better
so it's a letter i could never send

can we spend all our lives together
a simple melody is all i'll bring
you're the only song for this singer
and i will love you 'til the very end

somewhere between lonely and my conscience
between the devil and the deep blue sea
i bought into some lies i will never know why
i sold off a little part of me

still there are places i'll remember
just like the sun they'll always shine
but nowhere can compare to the sunlight in your hair
and the stars i see right there behind your eyes

when my curve ball won't break around your neck
and all my fastest pitches disappear into the upper deck
announcers shake their heads from radio towers
would you be with me on the long walk to the showers

when these losses take their toll on your believing
and your faith in something it trickles down to none
let it be the last inning of my losing season
maybe the springtime's finally come

my losing season
my losing season

Did You Know?

A "sports-as-a-metaphor-for-life" song, according to Bill, written just before heading out on a long house concert tour in the summer of 2003. This song was originally slated for Dear Life, but Bill tells us why it didn't appear: "Long Letter would have made it... but when I recorded it at John's later we realized that the gut string guitar went outta tune about 1/2 way through... so that one was banished."

Appeared On…
