Big As The Sky   Year: 2007 | Run Time: 6:24

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI)

daddy stepped into this world
with a cry in twenty nine
he was hungry just to fill that hole
as big as the sky
and he worked his daddy's farm
in the morning and at dusk
book learning was his ticket out
he said you do what you must

as big as the sky as deep as the shame
you can't hardly cast (call) out what doesn't have a name
like a mournful dove a sad goodbye
it's hard to fill a hole it's hard to fill a hole
one as big as the sky

nine years down the road
when they were barely hanging on
wheat prices falling as hard as bones
and the boss took up and gone
in some ways we're all orphans
but this one he never found out why
he was hungry more than ever
to fill a hole as big as the sky

and you don't know who to call
and it ain't got an address
maybe somewhere between the stars
and that ache inside your chest
the one that felt just like a well
the one full up with tears
every time you pulled the bucket up
it's like looking in the mirror

and who cares about your bottle
hell the damage is good and done
all that pushing away
of your friends and loved ones
to keep us from inspecting
the wound that hurt the most
like a reflection in the mirror
'cause you felt just like a ghost

Did You Know?

This is a song Bill wrote about his father, Bill Mallonee, Sr. He has said that it feels like the final chapters of "America" (see Jugular). He also says, "I guess over the years I've written a lot of grief songs... hope this helps some folks... pretty cathartic for me... but with nice results." The following verse was dropped from the final cut:

from the voices in your memories / to the tapes inside you keep / to the prayers that hit the ceiling / as you cried in a sleep

Appeared On…
