so you cobbled a grim piece with some wood and six strings
hoping to keep it at bay
yeah you counted the wounds from an old broken heart
counted all the stitches it took
just to clean up the mess and get the broken bones set
if there's one thing that never got shook
so i carved it by words painted it by feel
tapes spinning free they were running off the reel
brought it all to bear then bent it out of shape
and coated with blood and magnetic tape
and i loved your band even when they were rough
hell i even bought all your solo stuff
i loved your heart 'cause i felt the thing burn
i stood in the front when their backs were all turned
reached in the well and i reached for the stars
you can reach for the highway hell it ain't that far
you reach for the hearts of the people who come
you give them skin so they can stay warm
but it comes with a price and a cost you can't show
and when the check came you're the last to know
running on empty and running on fumes
running just to evade the feeling of doom
there will be a hanging there's already been
we'll pay a thousand times for failing them
you should have known when the rod got thrown
you just sleep in the car you can never go home
yeah and i dug your band and i loved the noise
it was intangible variables you employed
just like a scalpel in a master stroke
to say we were busted but never quite broke
you bury your hatchet you empty your pen
saw you turn your cheek time and again
and ran up with new records 'cause you're made for this
brother anyone hears while they're taking a piss
straight note chaser if you will tonight

baby i died at an early age
don't waste the ink on the obit page
it's the weight of failure you can't ignore
between a bullet and a power cord
the scorekeeping that ain't good for your health
