News From 1996

Dec 3, 1996
VoL Absent from Flying Tart

The Flying Tart Christmas album was released but didn't contain the Vigilante's "Angels From the Realms of Glory" nor the Crash Test Dummies song. Someone reported that there were problems with their respective labels.

Slow Dark Train Coming?

The new album is due out March 18. It is still tentatively titled Slow Dark Train, but there is some concern that it sounds too much like Bob Dylan's Slow Train Coming. (Bob who?)

VoL Slated for Flying Tart Compilation

Flying Tart records will be releasing a Christmas album in November that features songs from Crash Test Dummies, Sixpence None the Richer, and lots of other bands, including our beloved Vigilantes. We're not sure which song, yet, but it could be a Christmas song that the band recorded some time ago. (See Recordings for some previous Christmas compilations that featured the Vigilantes.)

Skin, Not Kin

Nope, it's "Judas Skin." The band will finish recording the new album tomorrow—Bill says it's a "raw organic record".

New Album Title Revealed

The University of Georgia school newspaper, Red and Black, quotes Bill as saying the name of the new album is Slow Dark Train. It also refers to the song "Judas Kin"—our unrecorded song list may have this mistakenly listed as "Judas Skin." Bill says the album is "kind of thrashy. Real fast and real loud."

Bill, Tom, and Chris are in the studio recording the new album for Mercury Records. It is slated for a January release.

The new compilation album is now expected to be released on September 10.

New Album Overview

The new album for Mercury Records will be produced by Bill Mallonee (with Dan Russell and Danny Hallas). Bill says to expect a "more raucous, unkinder, ungentler" album with "some darker 3am kind of acoustic tracks like some of the earlier stuff". Also, Mercury is talking about pushing the album (with funds) more than Capricorn pushed the last two albums.

Vigilantes Heading into Studio

The Vigilantes are going into the studio in September to record an all new record for Mercury Records. Expect a release in early 1997.

The new compilation album is now expected to be released on August 28th, one day later than we previously thought.

Compilation Project Availability

Dan Russell from Fingerprint Records, the Vigilantes' record label, says that the new compilation album will be available directly from Fingerprint first. The cost of $15 includes shipping.

Capricorn Purchased

Capricorn was recently purchased by Mercury Records. It's unclear what this means for VoL. The album due out in early '97 may or may not be on Mercury. More news as it comes in.

Bill's First Electric Guitar Solo (Among Other Things)

The compilation album is called VOL, (such titles as "Resplendent" and "Dead Weight" and "Unclaimed Freight" had been tossed around), and the band is expecting to shoot a video for "Doublecure" for a press kit. "This is the first time we've been in the studio with this current line-up," says Bill. "Tom [Crea] and Chris [Bland] just did a great job. We all feel good about it. I played my first electric guitar solo, and John Keane liked it! It's on the end of 'Hopeless Is As Hopeless Does.' It's my little eight measure of glory." The album is due out in August, and a brand new album may be ready early next year.

May 23, 1996
Project Updates

The compilation album, tentatively titled Doublecure, is still scheduled for August, and a new album is scheduled for January 1997.

Rumors of New VoL Projects

Bill seems to be writing songs faster than they can record them, but that may soon be remedied if a current rumor is to be believed. The rumor says to expect a compilation CD (on Warner-Alliance?) in mid-summer with three new titles (including "Double Cure"). It also says we can expect an all-new CD in the fall on either Warner or Mercury/Capricorn. Any deals or decisions have probably not been made, however, so the true nature of the next album is still anybody's guess.

New Song Titles for VoL Compilation Project

The compilation album, due out the second week of August will feature the following new songs: "Double Cure," "Hopeless is as Hopeless Does," "When I'm Broken (See What Happens)," and "And We Drown."

Compilation CD Announced!

The rumor seems to be true. Look for a compilation CD in August on a Warner label with four new tunes (one is "Double Cure," the other three are your guess from the unrecorded song list. The new songs were produced by John Keane. We still have no certainties for the next new album, but it may possibly be another for Capricorn Records with some sort of Mercury association. Stay tuned.
