Recording for New Project Complete

The band has finished recording and mixing 16 tracks for the new album. Bill says it has "some noisy garage rockers a la Crazy Horse, some more 'mature' pieces, and some acoustic 3 AM songs Kenny and I did" in addition to "some surprises". He says the band is almost completely free of previous contracts and entanglements and is ready to release this new one independently and see what the future holds.

Artwork Possibilities for New Project

Bill Mallonee and Tobin Hines are designing the cover artwork for the new album (we don't have a title yet). Reportedly, the band is thinking of having Tobin hand-draw some artwork on fancy paper for a limited edition version of the album. It would cost more than the regular album, but it would be very cool.

Shifts

According to Bill Mallonee, who recently posted a band update on the Vigilantes of Love mailing list, the band may be about to go through a shift in direction—the music and personnel aren't changing, but the avenue through which their songs reach the listeners may be unpaved on this next go-around. The new album is shaping up well, he says, and the band may cut loose from Capricorn and distribute it independently of current labels and management and maybe even under a different band name. We'll keep you posted.

Welcome Scott Klopfenstein

Omitted all of this time: since Tom Crea left the band, Scott Klopfenstein has been pounding drums for the Vigilantes as they've been playing show after show for the past six months. Sorry, Scott. (Maybe we'll have some pictures of the current lineup soon.)

Welcome Kenny Hutson

Slow Dark Train is in stores! Also, word is that the trio has become a quartet again with the addition of Kenny Hutson, a multi-instrumentalist (he plays mandolin, guitar, pedal steel, and lap steel) who will add some acoustic elements to the mix.

Killing Floor Reissue

The Killing Floor reissue includes four tracks that have not been previously released: live versions of "Odious," "Undertow," and "Earth Has No Sorrow" recorded at New York's CBGB on April 7, 1993, and a demo of "Cold Ground" recorded in Atlanta after a show at Eddie's Attic. The songs are all performed by the lineup that recorded Welcome To Struggleville: Bill Mallonee, Travis McNabb (now with Better Than Ezra), Newton Carter, and David LaBruyere.

Upcoming Releases This Spring

Bill will be recording a solo album in April. Also, Killing Floor will be rereleased this summer and may include some previously unreleased live tracks (from the incredibly tight Struggleville band) recorded at a festival in Boston. The new Mercury/Capricorn album, Slow Dark Train, is still slated for June, and the company wants a new electric version of "Love Cocoon" to be the first single.

Delays and Productions

Slow Dark Train has been delayed until June. In the mean time, Bill is co-producing the new album from Dime Store Prophets.

Tom Crea Leaves VoL

Tom Crea is no longer playing drums with the band because of different career plans. The band is working on filling the position, playing a few dates, practicing lots in anticipation of a tour following the release of the new album, and Bill is still writing new songs. Capricorn hasn't announced a release date for the album, yet.

Project Title and Status

The new album, due in March, is still tentatively titled Slow Dark Train, but Bill, perhaps jokingly, suggested it could change to Garage Mahal.
