311 Sues Capricorn

The band that put the Capricorn label into a tailspin while VoL was a labelmate, 311, is suing Capricorn for breach of contract. They claim that Capricorn "failed to market or promote the band adequately for their recent albums." 311 is suing to terminate their contract.

Where to Buy Audible Sigh

Hey folks, Bill has asked anyone who is planning to buy the new album when it hits the shelves next week to do so from an outlet that reports sales via the Soundscan system. This system is used to track the sales of albums, and a new album's Soundscan numbers in its first few weeks of release are very important from a business perspective. So buying from a store that reports to Soundscan in the first week of release is your best way to help the band.

So the question is, who reports to Soundscan? Well, True Tunes Etc. says they do, and they're taking orders now. PasteMusic also says they expect to be reporting by the time Audible Sigh is released and they expect to be taking orders for Audible Sigh soon. I believe that CDnow does report, and they are taking orders now, but I believe Amazon does not report sales to Soundscan.

Your purchase doesn't need to be made online to be counted since many brick-and-mortar record stores also report to Soundscan, but I don't have a list of which ones. The music manager of Logos in Richmond, VA, says his store does. By the way, if you can't find a way to get the album from one of these stores, don't let that stop you from getting this disk soon anyway. It's a keeper.

Hey, have you noticed the new pictures that have been added to the live photos page? More stuff will be appearing on this site as I try to clean out the place to make room for the new tenants.

I should make one final note: This week Gene "Eugene" Andrusco passed away. Though Gene never worked directly with the Vigilantes, his death has certainly been felt by many of the band's fans and members—many of them have been and continue to be greatly affected by Gene's life and music. By all counts, he will be missed, hugely, around the globe.

Visitors Get Glimpse of the New Website

People who have visited www.billandvol.com in the last day or two have been able to get a taste of what the new web site will look like. It also uses some graphics from the new album, so check it out. It's just a promo site—the real one will have more content and images, and it'll be ready in time for the Audible Sigh launch. They're also taking advance orders for the new fan club.

Train Pretty Close To Leavin'

The engine is warming up for the release of Audible Sigh which is now set at March 28. (Our page describes last summer's pre-release which differs from the official release slightly.) Bill and VoL are planning to tour the US and Europe between March 28 and June 10, so watch for dates as they begin to roll in.

The first single, "Goes Without Saying", has shipped to a variety of radio stations, and you may have seen the online stores taking advance orders (CDnow, True Tunes Online, and Amazon, to name a few of the reliable ones). It's not clear, yet, where you can make your purchase count the most, but if we find out, we'll sound the horn.

Bill and VOL will have a new web site shortly as this one rides off into the sunset with dust in its teeth. Stay tuned for the gritty details.

More UK Activity and Tour Info

We previously reported that the new label started by Bob Harris, popular DJ of BBC Radio 2, would be releasing Bill's latest album Audible Sigh in the UK. Apparently doing so would prevent him from playing the band on his radio show due to a conflict of interests, so the album will be released on a different label to give Bob the freedom to continue highlighting the Vigilantes on his show. The release date should be unaffected by this change.

In other news, Buddy Miller recently toured the UK in support of his latest album Cruel Moon, and at his final shows in London he asked Bill Mallonee to do a few songs in the middle of his set. Bill sang "Goes Without Saying" and "Solar System", both from the new Audible Sigh, with acoustic guitar and harmonica. Buddy is also, of course, the producer of Audible Sigh. While he was there, Bill did a quick solo tour of mostly pubs and was very well received everywhere he went. One of the shows was with Martin Stephenson and another was with Bap Kennedy, an Irish folk singer.

If you'd like to see Bill and VoL play at the Glastonbury Festival, head over to their web site and vote. VoL is well ahead of that other band from Athens, GA. And speaking of live shows, if you'd like VoL to play in your area contact the band's manager, Lott Shudde. They're organizing a grassroots tour for Audible Sigh, and any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Finally, although VoL will be getting a new web site soon and this one will no longer be updated, we'd like to keep using this one until the new one is ready, so if you hear that VoL is playing a show that is not on the live dates list, please let the web maintainer know and we'll add it right away. Get out of the house why don't you and see a great live band.

Artwork Appears for New Audible Sigh

Well the street date for the new Audible Sigh is the end of March, and the pieces are starting to come together. The artwork is being completed by Paul Soupiset who also did the artwork on the True Tunes pre-release. And word is that the new version of the album contains a wonderful, mostly acoustic version of "Solar System" as a closer in the great VoL tradition of haunting final songs. Despite all that the band has been through to release this album properly, the final result may be better now than it ever has been.
