Quotes from Bill Mallonee
Mar 17, 2006: ...some noisy stuff and some more sober stuff... kinder gentler a collection of Athen's finest derelicts and scoundrels... a musical cornucopia of good intentions, failed dreamers and star climbers...
Mar 23, 2006: Ben Holst and I are finished with about half the mixes for Permafrost! I know I say this everytime... but yep, it sounds great... really warm and the record that comes to mind as representative of "where" this is going is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers phenomenal Wildflowers. Permafrost (thus far) is rich, complex, mature and really noisy in places... rockin', blistered, lonely and fractured... I'm really really pleased with it... LOTS of electric guitars and secondary guitars, solos (I take a full three minutes or so on a song called "Threadbare"—two guitars as in a sorta Neil Young "Down by the River" slug out). My Rickenbakkers got a full work-out... it is more keyboard heavy than in previous records with electric pianos, acoustic pianos and organs in abundance...
Mar 23, 2006: It's a record of affirmation and realism... breathe deep... the sun is still warm... mercy still has the final word.
Apr 1, 2006: I'm going under the moniker of Victory Garden/Bill Mallonee this time... VICTORY GARDEN: Loved the name since I was a youth and was always enamoured with war related enterprises... Victory Gardens were the few vegetables one generated off a small plots of backyard dirt to aid and abet our nation's war efforts in WW2... they allowed the farmers to send more food stuffs to the european and pacific theatres....
Aug 8, 2006: Permafrost is far more rocking in places. I see it as a very mature record and I think song writers DO in fact mature... sometimes you REALLY can and do say MORE with LESS. As long time listee, Brian Smith pointed out quite astutely, Permafrost is a good sampler of A LOT of what I've done over the years. From the noisy side of Americana to the more fragile side, to the British-y pop to the 60's psychedelia, it's all there on Permafrost...
