Almost Happened Then   Year: 2007 | Run Time: 7:01

Written by Bill Mallonee for CyBrenJoJosh (BMI)

i made a pretty picture when i was six
in the colors of the fall
i put my house and some halloween cats in there
and all the ghosts i'd meet later on
i put a false address on my mailbox
'cause i wanted to stay hid
i figured if you could trick the darkness
well it might not find out where you lived

i stood before my bedroom jury
the flag outside half mast
it's the same old sad story kid
there ain't no fudging of the facts
and the shadows they always lingered
the shadows were too close
till i was emptied of a will to live
and vacant of every proper boast

almost almost almost happened then
almost almost ah but then again

well now i just disgust you
and i more or less agree
for all the promises i've broken
and all the others i didn't kept
well if there's no starting over
no beginning aright
well it's funny how i felt that way
pretty much all of my life

i remember my kids laughing
as the sun set gold in their hair
and me with all those wrong tapes spinning
but i was arrested i was smitten there
entranced by the smell of chlorine
dried on their brown skin
hey i was almost saved from the blackness
i swear it almost happened then

i beat it out of the city
took any highway heading north
i flagged a ride all the way to the state line
and the rain she held forth
it could have been the hum of the engine
on these asphalt ribbons i used
i kept trying to fashion them into a bow
for a pretty present i made for you

yeah and it's always a touch of something
a little less than class
it's a wayward son on the run
somewhere between presley hank and johnny cash
could be a foretaste of heaven
against a backdrop of the blues
well rock and roll's always a pair
of faux leather two-tone pawnshop shoes

Did You Know?

Not surprisingly, Bill calls this one of the saddest song he's ever written. There is a missing verse that did not make the final cut:

and if there's no starting over if there's no beginning aright / ah well it's funny how i've always felt that way pretty much for all my life / some folks will tell you one thing some will tell you something else / but you will never know for sure what awaits you at your death

Appeared On…
